Executive Director: Dana M. Jean

An educator at heart, Dana has spent much of her adult life with children and adolescents. Her career began in the University of Guadalajara in Mexico where she taught English as a Second Language (ESL) and helped to initiate their first preschool ESL program. Simultaneously, Dana taught in a bilingual high school at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores where she developed curriculum for their first Social Sciences Department. She developed and taught the first Introduction to Sociology and Cultural Comparisons courses offered.

Upon returning to the U.S., Dana earned a Master of Public Management degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She did this while managing the Western Pennsylvania Family Center, a not-for-profit and educational resource to mental health professionals and families in the outlying community. At the Family Center, Dana wrote a grant that was funded by the R.K. Mellon Foundation, the funds of which were used to develop a library resource center and a children’s daycare center.

Her husband’s career led them to Phoenix, Arizona, where she spent time as mother to three active children, Rebekah, Isabelle and Jacques (“Jack”). While working in the home, Dana purchased and managed a stationery boutique, later converting it to an Internet business. Never losing sight of her passion for education, Dana focused on developing her experience in education and nonprofit management by volunteering in several local organizations, and the local schools. Recently, she ended a term as President of the Parent Teacher Student Organization at her children’s school, having helped ease the group through a major transition as school boundaries were reconfigured. She is serving a three-year term as secretary of her neighborhood community association, also a not-for-profit organization. Dana presently works as a substitute teacher and is pursuing her Arizona teaching credentials. She plans to begin a Master of Education in Leadership and Administration program in the Spring of 2009.

In addition to the Master of Public Management, Dana holds a Bachelor of Science in Sociology/Anthropology and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina. She speaks English, Spanish, French and Creole.
