Daria Lyman is the mother of three young children, ages seven, four and two. While staying at home with her children, she currently runs a licensed home preschool and is a student of the Montessori education methodology. She expects to have her Montessori certification by the spring of 2008. Daria Lyman is passionate about children and plans to focus her time on helping disadvantaged children, especially through education. Daria is also an artist and mainly features children in her work.
Before moving to Boston in 2002, Daria Lyman lived in Washington DC where she worked for the US Department of State after receiving the Presidential Management Fellowship, to pursue her long standing interests in foreign policy and international affairs. During her tenure in the federal government, Daria served several rotations in the Department of State including Program Manager in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) and Program Analyst at the Secretary’s Resource, Policy and Planning Office (SRPP). At INL, Daria was the Program Manager for the Mexico desk, where she assisted in the development of Mexico’s law enforcement capabilities. Her time at the Mexico desk also included a six month tour at the US Embassy in Mexico City where she had the opportunity to work closely with the Mexican law enforcement and intelligence agencies in overseeing the development of specialized counternarcotics programs, an investigative organized crime unit, and a financial intelligence unit to combat money laundering. Daria also served as Program Manager for Central America where she was able to assist in the reallocation of equipment and resources during the turnover of the Panama Canal. She also assisted the Costa Rican Government in the development of a viable Coast Guard and provided support to the Nicaraguan police department in building an anti-corruption unit and an independent civil service for law enforcement. At SRPP, Daria had the opportunity to assist the Secretary of State with her budget planning and coordination with the legislative branch. This sojourn at SRPP provided Daria with a rare opportunity to witness the inside political negotiations that occur during the allocation of the federal budget.
Daria was also seconded by the Department of State to the White House Drug Policy Office for six months to assist in the coordination of the US inter-agency development of a Binational Drug Strategy with Mexico. This experience provided her the opportunity to work closely with all other US federal agencies as well as participating in the intense discussions that occur in the negotiation of a bilateral strategy.
Before working for the federal government, Daria completed her Masters Degree in International and Public Affairs at Colombia University in New York City, focusing on Economic and Political Development and US Foreign Policy. Daria also has a Bachelors Degree from New York University in Latin American Studies with a minor in Spanish. She studied Spanish language and Mexican culture at the University of Guadalajara for a semester.
